CEREMONY PREPARATION

What is Ayahuasca?
Ayahuasca is a sacred medicine made from two Amazonian plants: the ayahuasca vine (nishi) and the chacruna leaf (káwa). Together, they open a connection to the spirit world, cleanse the body, and help guide deep healing. In Shipibo tradition, Ayahuasca is not seen as just a plant — it is a living spirit, a teacher that shows the way to balance and truth.
The recipe was not learned through science or chance — it was the plants themselves, the elders say, that taught the first healers how to prepare this sacred brew.
Traditional Use
Traditionally, it was the healers — the onanya — who would drink Ayahuasca to diagnose and treat illness. Patients would not necessarily drink; they would simply receive the healing through the songs and medicines of the healer. Ayahuasca ceremonies were — and still are — spaces of protection, connection, and learning, guided by the wisdom of nature and the spirits.

What to Expect During Ceremony
Ceremonies are held at night, in darkness, and begin with prayers for protection and blessings to the medicine. Maestro Luis blesses the Ayahuasca before it is shared, and offers each participant a traditional tobacco soplo (blessing with smoke) to protect and center the body and spirit.
After drinking the medicine, there is a time of quiet as the Ayahuasca begins its work. Throughout the night, Maestro Luis sings ikaros — healing songs — to guide the ceremony and connect with each person’s energy.
Each participant receives a personal ikaro, sung directly to them, carrying prayers for their healing, balance, and protection.
The ceremony closes with a final chant that harmonizes the space and gently brings the group back to earth.
Ceremonies usually last around 4 to 5 hours.

Preparation Guidelines
In the weeks before and after working with Ayahuasca, we ask that you honor the medicine and your body by following these guidelines:
No sex (including self-pleasure) for at least 7 days before and after.
No alcohol for at least 7 days before and after.
No pork for at least 7 days before and after.
Avoid recreational drugs (especially strong substances like cocaine, marijuana, ecstasy).
Eat light, clean foods — avoid fried foods, spicy foods, and heavy dairy.
Rest and center yourself emotionally — anger, stress, and heavy distractions can make it harder for the plants to work.
If you are taking any medications, especially antidepressants or medications affecting the heart, it’s very important you consult your doctor and let us know in advance. Some medicines can be dangerous when combined with Ayahuasca.
Safety Considerations
Ayahuasca is not suited for everyone. For your safety:
If you have serious heart conditions, uncontrolled psychiatric disorders, or are on serotonergic medications (like SSRIs), this retreat may not be safe.
Honest communication about your health and medications is essential.
We are here to support you in preparing properly, and it’s important to listen carefully to the guidance given.
Our ceremonies are held with great care, and we are committed to supporting your journey in a way that honors both your well-being and the sacredness of the plants.
